Liferea (Linux Feed Reader) is an aggregator for online news feeds. There are many other news readers available, but these others are not available for Linux or require many extra libraries to be installed. Liferea tries to fill this gap by creating a fast, easy to use, easy to install news aggregator for Gtk/Gnome.

* Liferea is a simple RSS feed reader.
* Liferea uses a email-like three-pane interface to display news.
* Liferea lets you organize feeds in folders and supports OCS directory subscriptions.
* Important news items can be flagged in Liferea, new news announced via the Panel tray icon.
* Liferea can update feeds on individual schedules (respecting feed-set publishing times).
* A simple but effective search tool lets you search across folders and feeds in Liferea.
* Liferea lets you save searches as virtual folders automatically aggregating all matching items.
* You can set up filters to have Liferea parse and display headlines from web pages lacking a feed.
* Liferea can inform you about new news using pop-ups.
* Liferea supports Linux/BSD/Unix and requires Gnome 2.

Liferea knows three display modes:

  • Normal View - Email client-like: the upper right pane contains a list of all headlines of the selected feed and the selected headline is shown in the lower right pane.

  • Wide View - 3 panes: the middle pane contains a list of all headlines of the selected feed and the selected headline is shown in the right pane.

  • Combined View - 2 panes: the right pane contains a combined display of all headlines of the selected feed. You can change between these modes in the "View" menu. This is a per-feed setting so you can view each feed in the mode that fits best. The default viewing mode is "Normal View".
